I haven't played air hockey much at all in the past few months, but at some point during my sabbatical I apparently became an unstoppable force. My friends and I played last night, and I came out undefeated, winning games against four different people. That was only because Eric wasn't there. Maybe if I take another four-month break I'll be able to stomp him, too.
I recently learned that "tina" is gay slang for meth. For some reason, if you work that word into conversation over and over again, it never stops being funny. Also, it's funnier if you spell it with two e's: Teena. I have no idea why.
I had a really fun weekend, which led to a nice conversation between Eric and me about how lucky we are to have friends who are funny, kind, interesting, and pretty much effortless to be with. And also how glad we are that we seem to know more of these people every year.
The San Diego Zoo has a polar bear cam. I can't tell if it's any good because so far I have only tried to look at it at night and therefore can't see anything but a black screen. That's not really very interesting, and it leads me to wonder why the braindeads at the San Diego Zoo aren't subjecting the polar bears to unflinching 24-hour floodlight illumination for the web-browsing public's entertainment. Get with the program, zoo people.
Lasagna is good.
A customer at the bar gave Eric a ton of back issues of Granta some time ago. They've just been sitting on the shelf patiently all year, until last week. I've already been through three, and I just finished the Losers issue and loved it. Having access to a whole shitload of essays, short stories, and novel excerpts in different styles and on a variety of topics is great, especially given my recent tendency to become, with lightning speed and without warning, completely sick of most everything that interests me. This impatience is troubling, annoying, and completely unproductive, but at least I won't have to buy another book until spring.
So, how are you?
